Finding a mechanical keyboard that manages to feel genuinely premium while keeping a slim, low-profile design is harder than it should be. Most thin keyboards either feel flimsy or lose that satisfying mechanical feedback that makes long typing sessions enjoyable.
I’ve spent the last few weeks using the IQUNIX MQ80 as my main keyboard to see whether it could deliver a proper high-end typing experience without the bulk of a traditional mechanical board. After living with it day in, day out, it’s quietly become one of the most important parts of my desk setup.

Getting started with the MQ80 was refreshingly painless. One of the main reasons I was drawn to it in the first place is how clearly it caters to Mac users. The correct macOS keycaps come pre-installed, which sounds small but makes a big difference. There’s no rummaging around for Command and Option keys and no need to remap anything just to get a familiar Mac layout.
It also supports VIA, which made tweaking a few function keys to suit my workflow quick and easy. The 80 percent layout hits a really nice balance for me. You keep the function row and proper arrow keys, but the keyboard still feels compact and uncluttered on the desk.

The moment you lift the MQ80 out of the box, the weight stands out. At roughly 1180g, it feels unexpectedly hefty for a low-profile keyboard, and that’s very much a good thing. The full CNC-machined aluminium body gives it a reassuring, rock-solid feel, with absolutely no flex anywhere in the chassis.
The 180-grit anodised finish adds to that premium impression. It feels smooth without being slippery and does a respectable job of hiding fingerprints during everyday use. Overall, it comes across less like a lightweight accessory and more like a serious piece of hardware.
Connectivity & Technical Specs
IQUNIX keeps things straightforward when it comes to connectivity. The MQ80 offers tri-mode support, so switching between devices is easy. You can use Bluetooth 5.1, 2.4GHz wireless, or a wired USB-C connection depending on how your setup looks.
Bluetooth support for up to three devices is particularly handy if you move between a MacBook, iPad, or secondary machine. Plug it in via USB-C and you get a 1000Hz polling rate, which keeps everything feeling snappy and responsive. Whether you’re typing, coding, or gaming, it never feels like the keyboard is holding you back.
Creamy Typing Feel
The typing experience is built around Kailh Gold Red linear switches with a light 40g actuation force. Combined with IQUNIX’s Le-Tray gasket mount system, the result is a surprisingly comfortable and refined feel.
Low-profile keyboards often feel stiff and hollow due to limited internal space, but that’s not the case here. Multiple layers of sound-dampening foam and a flex-cut PCB give each keypress a soft, cushioned quality. The sound profile is muted and smooth, with that creamy character people often chase in custom boards.
The PBT keycaps play their part too. They have a subtle texture that feels great under the fingers and should hold up well over time without developing that shiny, greasy look cheaper caps tend to get.
Final Verdict
The IQUNIX MQ80 is easily one of the best low-profile mechanical keyboards I’ve used. It manages to blend sleek, minimalist design with the solid feel and satisfying typing experience of a much thicker custom board. It’s not the lightest option if you plan to carry it around every day, but as a permanent desk keyboard, the weight and build quality are definite strengths.
If you’re after a refined, premium typing experience that works beautifully with macOS straight out of the box, the MQ80 is an excellent choice and one that’s earned a permanent place on my desk.
